both kinds. I'd assume we agree that at least some things ought to be private rather than public, right?

We do have cultural norms & they are unavoidable. However, there is no justification for arguing for modesty as a virtue in this sense.

Equal marriage is better than throwing gay men off buildings. Being able to dress for the weather better than being covered at all times.

Huh? The death penalty for homosexuality has been and is law all over the place. So much of a norm, it's been enshrined in laws.
