Difficult for me to weigh in. Friends have never been about emotional support for me. That's what family/significant other is for.

I'll GIVE emotional support in friendships, mind you. But I just don't seek it for myself in that context.

Interesting, coz I'm the opposite. Well, I'll give support. But I'm also very close 2 a no. of friends & really need that intimacy.

I think it's because I'm an Aspie. I'm not even aware of the nature of my feelings half the time. Dismiss them as random.

That's interesting. Do you find that mostly helpful? Or frustrating? Or is that not the right question 2 ask. I'm v diff, so fascinated.

It's mostly annoying. I'll have sudden feelings of anxiousness or sadness and have no idea why. I just try to ignore them.

My daughter might be. She says 'I'm anxious/sad and I don't know why' quite a lot. Sometimes I can see why.

I used to think it was just an anxiety disorder, but it turns out it's typical Aspie stuff.

Hmm. One psychiatrist says my daughter is on the spectrum and the other says no, general anxiety disorder.

It could be either. If it's a spectrum thing, it'll come along with other symptoms. Like obsessive special interests.

That was the other box 1st psych ticked. 2nd says no coz strong theory of mind, good story-telling ability & much empathy. Doesn't matter.

Manifests differently in girls and boys. Female Aspies lack the empathy deficit, for example.

There's actually some debate over whether empathy deficit is a thing with Aspies at all. It's not that we don't empathize with people.

I read that the empathy is there but theory of mind needed to drive it is often lacking?

Could be, I guess. It's mostly just that I don't care about people's reactions if I think they're silly or irrational.

It's a mixed blessing. It can lead to a lot of problems if you're not careful. That's something you learn through experience.

But even then, I avoid doing the thing because the cons outweigh the pros, not because I actually care I've annoyed people.

The biggest downside is that this is largely cognitive, not intuitive. The emotional breaks aren't always there. Leads to big faux pas.
