Listen to Ben. He's enjoying this. No chance of serious discourse.
If he's an academic, he should know that you can't proscribe terms in academia. You can only describe what you mean by them.
The way he spoke, I suspected him of being a student. He was also behaving like one.
That's rather disparaging of students. 
Well Sadly it is. My first employer once said to me; All can study & graduate. Only a few are good at what they do. That's the reality today
I was appalled at some of the people who passed with a 2;2 and were accepted onto teacher training courses.
Not just being bad at writing - some very knowledgeable & intelligent ppl are - but having the faintest, buggering clue what's going on.
One girl I had to be in a group with & her response to 17th century poetry was 'It's a bit old-fashioned.' She teaches English now.
