Yes. I was pondering if too much freedom could possibly have the same effect. A possible explanation for the political climate, as of late.

Yes. There have been some things written bordering on this, haven't there? We have trouble getting away from tribalism.

I'm sure there have been. I was applying this theory to the left instead of the right. Usually it's connected to the populist right.

But I think you could apply it to the left as well. Or maybe that has been done as well... 🙃

I was thinking of what Haidt and Douthat etc have said about liberalism & democracy not doing well in diversity & being rather unnatural.

I must have read that. Wasn't necessarily thinking of this, but yes. Diversity isn't really natural. Tribalism is part of our nature.

Indeed. It takes education to overcome it. I'm beginning to acknowledge the limits of how much we can overcome.

Much as I'd like tribalism to disappear completely, it is probably utopian and a workable balance needs to be nurtured instead.

Yes. This is what I believe as well. I used to be an idealist. That ship has sailed a while ago 😁

I'm beginning to realise (at a deeper level) that being a "citizen of the world" is not for everyone, at a fundamental level.

No, its not. I have some nationalist intuitions although I don't like them. Not quite the same as tribalist tho, I don't think.

eg, I'm sad that cockney will soon be gone even tho it doesn't matter in any real sense. I like familiar cultural things.

Cockley is a major part of the British global identity, as the counter to the posh toffs. To lose both would be sad in their own way.

Think it code for 'I want fewer brown & black ppl' which is so far from the point that its hard to even begin explaining why it isn't.
