Which sounds cynical but really lives were tied together so much more than they are now. You knew each other very well. Limited escapism.
More options = less imperative to make marriage work. I still think that's better on the whole.

I'm not saying we should limit the freedom. I was thinking that not everybody is able to cope with this. Or at least not as well.

I agree. This is the argument for collectivism. Liberalism, individualism etc has a cost.

Or an absence of real issues to deal with. I doubt we'd have all this if there was a war or famine going on.

Yes. Of course. But I think Liberalism and individualism would suffer during such times. Freedom in the broad sense, yes.
