I've decided to stay in the 14th century & will renew my PhD proposal research looking at that. I did think of going earlier but no.

That would have let me into a PhD programme in medieval manuscripts which had already accepted me in principle & looked great but no.

14th century is much richer in women writing and being written about. Also, it was absolutely nuts which I must admit I love.

Yes! I know Tuchman is often criticised for seeing medieval people as fundamentally different to moderns in terms of individuality etc.

Quite Burkhardtian in that, I'm told. (Only on chapter two) But she's still an excellent historian.
