But mostly ppl had to get through lives which were hard and they had to do it together & they felt love & loyalty & commitment.

And this worked out with varying degrees of success & there was community justice & strong expectations of not being a complete arsehole.

In communities where everyone was very close together, indications that one spouse was not caring for the other wld bring strong disapproval

Thought: Maybe the "freedom" and lack of direct social contact creates new obsticals for people. A certain frustration. Like an open sea.

More options = less imperative to make marriage work. I still think that's better on the whole.

I'm not saying we should limit the freedom. I was thinking that not everybody is able to cope with this. Or at least not as well.

I agree. This is the argument for collectivism. Liberalism, individualism etc has a cost.

Yes. I thought it was interesting because the people who don't seem to be able to cope as well, claim they are oppressed.
