Helen Pluckrose added,
I think measuring how able ppl are to be convinced by opposing viewpoints needs to be measured alongside whether they then changed their own
I tend to feel: Being convinced by counterview & adopting as your own = good. Being convinced but sticking with old belief anyway = bad.
As long as your judgement is good in evaluating these things. Certainly relig ppl & PoMos more likely to claim to respect all beliefs.
Even tho that renders 'respect' meaningless. If you respect the claim that the world is 4.5 billion yrs old & 6,000 what is that worth?
I'm sure I'd match these findings. I'd admit to being absolutely certain of very little but in practice I'd still want things to make sense.
So often ppl go from 'We can't know anything for sure' to 'Any claim is equally likely.' No.
I do like to think of myself as open-minded but, to me, this does not mean 'stuff any old shit in there & don't worry if it doesn't add up.'
Open-minded, to me, means being open to changing your mind when given reason to do so, not holding contradictory beliefs at same time.
