Number of times I have made a little flashcard to stop me having the same arguments repeatedly - 44. Number of times this has worked - 0

If it is any consolation Helen, our discussion about Tim Farron gave me a lot to think about and i partially reconsidered my position.
-
:) It is! I needed that. Thank you. My ideas shift slightly in response to other people's. Sometimes radically but seldom.

Your card doesn't explain why free speech can work & censoring speech can't. We must hear odious ideas directly from those who believe them.
-
No, it's explaining that supporting free speech for nasty ideas doesn't mean you support them.
-
For bad ideas to be countered they must be heard "in their most plausible and persuasive form". cf J S Millhttp://www.goodreads.com/quotes/66643-he-who-knows-only-his-own-side-of-the-case …
-
Yes, I recognised the Mill quote. In that one, I am talking about being on the same side but having different approaches.
-
Socially on the same side, but in tactical terms you are on the opposite side to one who seeks censorship. Y should he support your method?
-
We can talk about that once they've accepted we both want the same thing. That's an essential starting point.

You have over 7,000 followers on here. Having these arguments isn’t totally pointless, who knows how many people you might have influenced!
-
:) I don't think it is pointless. I have influenced people and they have influenced me.

Oh Helen Pluckrose, I return to Twitter after a few days absence and your thoughts curl comfortably around my very heart and hug it.
-
You are so poetic, Ania!
-
One responds to one's muse as merely a vessel for the truth and beauty that one's muse brings to the world.

That’s brilliant! I may have to “culturally appropriate” it.

but you are NOT on the same side. those who "don't get it" are only interested in power, not in finding good solutions.

They are determined not to. They love it. It is those that watch on the sidelines that need a small push to stand up.

You may be too generous. I find people attacking me are often genuine bigots. They are probably ignorant of it but that's no excuse.
-
They may have good intentions (doesn't everyone?) but their language and arguments are intrinsically hate-filled and prejudiced.

Perfect. But, as you already said, some people are determined to not understand.
