A neurologist once insisted I was depressed & needed anti-depressants. Got very cross when I declined.

Told him, 'Honestly, it's fine. If I have depression, it's a kind that doesn't stop me thoroughly enjoying life so I'm happy to keep it.'

Prob shldn't have added 'I'll also take the diabetes which doesn't affect my blood sugar & the asthma which doesn't affect my breathing.'

But I was cross too. Shortly after that, I suffered paralysis down my right side & he conceded that my symptoms might not be psychological.

This led to the cyst in my brain being found. I'm pretty much fine now. This happens a lot to ppl who've ever had a mental health diagnosis.

I had OCD but learnt how to beat it 15 years ago & now put the 'not being able to let things go' aspect to good use.

Mostly. You know what I mean. But this leaves me somewhat conflicted about mental health activism. There's a need for it and yet...

I'm not sure the current attitude is always helpful. I don't think its ever helpful to take on a pathology as an identity & that happens.

There must be a way to encourage resilience &coping w/out stigmatising or neglecting ppl who, with the best will in the world, simply aren't
