This perception of a dichotomy between passion & the mind is very much like the old theological distinction between scientia & sapientia. https://twitter.com/clairlemon/status/853872059247583233 …

Scientia is experience & engagement with world via the senses - like the 'passion' described here. Related to nature & empiricism.

Sapientia is the wisdom of the intellect. Internal cogitations on the meaning of things . Related to ideas and reason.

Sometimes divided into 'animal nature' & 'higher nature' and sometimes into 'science' & 'philosophy' and therein lies a common problem.

Also found in the more secular thinking of the ancient philosophers between engagement with the world & retiring from it to cultivate wisdom

The world of action & experience and the world of contemplation & revelation. Passion vs intellect. Nature vs reason. Heart vs mind.

Of course we don't divide like this. We're not Klingons or Vulcans. And passion can be productive or destructive.

As can development of the intellect by working rationally on ideas w/out much empirical engagement w world. Thomas Aquinas comes to mind.

Of course this can be framed either way. Actively engaging with the world & thinking analytically abt what it all means are both needed.

But I wouldn't denigrate 'passion' - it underlies so much in art & science. It's very different to 'ideological fervour'.

But I do see the same problems the author does. I'd just quibble over terms & whether passion & engagement are really the problem.

Does seem to be a re-envisioning of the old problem of public or private life, action or contemplation, statesman or philosopher.

Framing it as passion vs moderation seems unhelpful to me.

I think campuses have allowed certain behaviours over time to be normalised. All they need is to set sensible policies applied consistently.

That would be good but that would entail overturning the whole system of thinking which led to this in the first place

The 'system of thinking' would be due to the lack of political & idealogical diversity, correct?

And the shift towards postmodernism in the academic left which I wrote about recently?

I thought that was covered by the lack of diversity.

Yes, kind of, but I'm really thinking of a large-scale academic shift in thinking which has also permeated culture more widely.
