This perception of a dichotomy between passion & the mind is very much like the old theological distinction between scientia & sapientia. https://twitter.com/clairlemon/status/853872059247583233 …

Of course we don't divide like this. We're not Klingons or Vulcans. And passion can be productive or destructive.
-
As can development of the intellect by working rationally on ideas w/out much empirical engagement w world. Thomas Aquinas comes to mind.
-
Of course this can be framed either way. Actively engaging with the world & thinking analytically abt what it all means are both needed.
-
But I wouldn't denigrate 'passion' - it underlies so much in art & science. It's very different to 'ideological fervour'.
-
But I do see the same problems the author does. I'd just quibble over terms & whether passion & engagement are really the problem.

Does seem to be a re-envisioning of the old problem of public or private life, action or contemplation, statesman or philosopher.
