We don't really need to lie to save ourselves. From harm, that is. If we do, then I think its ethically justifiable to do so.

I think this is an interesting point. I feel I agree with
@HPluckrose more instinctively, because mostly self preservation is good. -
But on reflection I think you have a point re if you pretends, especially for a long period of time, you contribute to the whole system.
