I agree. Much better to say 'How do you reconcile that with your earlier ideas or have your thoughts changed?' pleasantly if warranted.

Yep, but for some reason (I have a few ideas on why and it sounds like you do too), perceived hypocrisy makes us hate people intuitively.

I think we aim that disgust at ourselves and are so afraid of being hypocritical we let that fear discourage us from questioning our beliefs
