I've been playing with an idea of writing something about why I think we should be less hard on people for hypocrisy but probably never will

Ah. Very different. I'm looking at why we are and also arguing that much accusation of hypocrisy on the left gets the problem wrong.

I agree. Much better to say 'How do you reconcile that with your earlier ideas or have your thoughts changed?' pleasantly if warranted.

Yep, but for some reason (I have a few ideas on why and it sounds like you do too), perceived hypocrisy makes us hate people intuitively.
