Secular liberal democracy? I want to conserve that. Society is far from perfect but where it is imperfect, its because it lacks liberalism.

To make it a bit less abstract: I am currently reading the book "Contours of Ableism" and consider its theory postmodern.

And I've already found the way it analyzed ways of thinking about abledness and disability super enlightening.

It doesn't take meanings of abledness/disability for granted, asks how they are constructed, and it questions the "abled gaze".

Hmm. I find this kind of thing an interesting thought experiment but there is also a reality about bodies & what they were built to do.

So, it is alarming when eg deaf parents decline hearing aids which wld enable children to hear on the grounds that this diminishes deafness

Right. There is some point at which it all connects to the material, and I also find it necessary to take that into account.

From a universally liberal perspective, I would find these kind of explorations a personal interest which is neutral ethically.

And focus more specifically on barriers which close down opportunities for disabled people & how we can lift these.
