aren't there gradations of truth or transcendent truths that do not easily fall into such a binary?
That's not reality. It's opinion. That is genuinely subjective. The truth claim wld be that cigarettes both do & do not exist.

really? i don't think i follow. seems to me that example would be based on a set of truth claims,.../1

Yes, there are truths to call on to form moral evaluations but they themselves are then subjective.
-
is allowing husbands to beat wives a subjective moral evaluation? can you objectively say its wrong? at what point can you ?
-
We need to set a premise that harming human beings is generally wrong. Doesn't exist objectively. Universe doesn't care.
-
so you're not a harris-ian on ethics?
-
He sets a premise regarding the wellbeing of conscious creatures. I share it. It's not objective. It's humanist.
-
i don't think his premise is arbitrary. i also know that doesn't mean that human prosperity is some ultimate goal of the universe either
-
It's not arbitrary. It's humanist. There is a difference between moral principles/judgements & factual truths.
