Probably not a laptop. Either an iPad with the "keyboard cover" or an MS surface with the keyboard cover....

Yeah, I got the smaller version of the iPad pro, which you can't get the keyboard cover for. The bigger version you can.

I don't want a MacBook? These seem to be issued to academics everywhere I go?

But my biggest driver is just that unless you need the RAM/CPU a laptop gives (so dev, graphics, movies etc) a tablet is better

If you get a laptop make sure you get a solid state drive. No moving disk drive to damage; quick shutdown/startup.
