Yes their place of birth is an influence, Paris is very different from actual France. Even in Paris there are different schools of thought.

One is the birthplace of Scolastique, the other was founded by humanists. Father of which is French, but so not Parisian.

you kind of do. French intellectuals are not post-modernists (it's some Parisians that are) and most post-modernists aren't French.
