There are some debates which are considered satisfactorily resolved for nearly everyone but they shld still be able to be talked about.

The tendency to think other topics which are clearly very current & widely disputed should be closed is chiefly what's undermining the left.

Particularly, debates around Islam/Islamism/Muslims & trans identity/acceptance/equality are far from resolved culturally & need discussing.

These need to be won on the grounds of ideas. For me, consistently liberal ones which include individual freedoms are paramount.

I think those ones will win. Most ppl are not ideological extremists. They tend to want a general fairness & to be left alone.

Some ppl want to discriminate against certain identity groups & some ppl want to decide what everyone else is allowed to think & say.

But most people just want everyone held to the same basic standard of behaviour tho we differ on what that is. Not as much as is claimed.

When ppl complain abt the left or the right, most of the time they're complaining about double standards & authoritarianism.

Or singling out certain groups to demonise. A strong centre which values consistency, equal opportunities & freedom could win the day.

Very easy to say. Harder to work out the details. But a failure to value & aim for these things undermines public confidence in any position
