I have an instinct to discourage competitiveness & say it's not about winning but I mentally slap myself because I think it probably is.

Primary school used to go on about competitiveness being bad & having fun much more important. Just made kids feel guilty for wanting to win

I thought it was better say its perfectly natural & positive to want to win. Just don't be nasty about it & congratulate winner graciously.

this is the best advice! Wanting to win is great. But when you don't, be fair, shake hands, smile & try again.

primary school was "don't try to win, just be the best you can be". Prep school was "you must win, thats how u know ur the best"
