It sounds as tho its saying much the same as analyses I've read - gap almost disappears & is prob due to diff choices & attitudes.

although I have to admit I always get annoyed by the notion women earn less because they don't negotiate / fight for it as hard.

There could be some sexist attitudes on the part of male employers but doesn't seem to be endemic.
