Maybe we shld rename free speech 'free expression of opinions' so ppl can't point out that some things done verbally are rightly illegal.
-
-
Then ppl play on the ambiguity of the word 'idea' and say murdering someone is an idea. Sometimes the confusion is feigned. Sometimes not.
-
I think there's a problem with seeing free speech in terms of a continuum based on *speech* -what speech is allowed & what is not allowed.
-
That gives the impression of a somewhat arbitrary line having been drawn & which can be moved slightly w/out making much difference.
-
This is a false impression because the vital concept of freedom of speech is not actually abt speech -making noises with your mouth.
-
The important thing to protect is really about minds - ideas in the sense of thought & opinion, intellectual products & right to share them.
-
This is an entirely different thing to harmful actions perpetrated verbally. No continuum re discussing eg libertarianism & eg ordering a hit
-
If the perception of free speech as a continuum with a line drawn comes to dominate, it will be hard to keep opinions separate from actions.
-
The line cld be shifted & expressing disbelief in queer theory cld be on the side with fraud, espionage, perjury & conspiracy to murder.
-
Hopefully it wouldn't be punished so severely but expression of opinion wld be in same category as directly harmful actions done verbally.

There's a lot of qualifications to your examples (especially the ones about lying and fraud). To be fair 140 character limit.
-
What do you mean?
-
it also depends on if it had a materially negative impact on the person. Even then, it depends if your intent was to cause harm.
-
I'm not talking abt what laws are but an important conceptual difference between expressing ideas & harmful actions in words.
-
So if I heard a slanderous rumor and started repeating it without me knowing it was false, is that free speech to you?
-
Its not related to the concept of free expression of opinions & ideas that I am defending, no.
-
So should it only be considered free speech if it has been fact checked or phrased as an opinion?
-
I started by saying perhaps FoS shld be renamed 'free expression of opinions'. That's what I'm referring to.

Basic dictionary definitions are often unsuitable and inadequate for dealing with real-world situations.
