Plotting a terrorist attack, ordering a murder, conning someone out of money, making a false accusation of a crime, perjury etc.

Wastes endless time explaining to ppl determined not to understand that free speech is a specific concept tied to ideas, not speech itself.
-
Then ppl play on the ambiguity of the word 'idea' and say murdering someone is an idea. Sometimes the confusion is feigned. Sometimes not.
-
I think there's a problem with seeing free speech in terms of a continuum based on *speech* -what speech is allowed & what is not allowed.
-
That gives the impression of a somewhat arbitrary line having been drawn & which can be moved slightly w/out making much difference.
-
This is a false impression because the vital concept of freedom of speech is not actually abt speech -making noises with your mouth.
-
The important thing to protect is really about minds - ideas in the sense of thought & opinion, intellectual products & right to share them.
-
This is an entirely different thing to harmful actions perpetrated verbally. No continuum re discussing eg libertarianism & eg ordering a hit
-
If the perception of free speech as a continuum with a line drawn comes to dominate, it will be hard to keep opinions separate from actions.
-
The line cld be shifted & expressing disbelief in queer theory cld be on the side with fraud, espionage, perjury & conspiracy to murder.
-
Hopefully it wouldn't be punished so severely but expression of opinion wld be in same category as directly harmful actions done verbally.
