'It is really difficult & indeed psychologically unnatural to claim u hate an ideology w/out hating the ppl' he saidhttps://twitter.com/godless_mom/status/829340337634152450 …

There is nothing hateworthy in 'I believe in this 1 god & prophet.' That, i think, is just mistaken.It matters but not morally
@godless_mom -
Misogyny, homophobia, violence, intolerance & oppression are worthy of hatred. Those can be aspects of doctrine that can be hated.
-
But ppl aren't doctrines. If someone embodied the worst aspects of Islam, I daresay I'd hate them but so would the ppl who embodied the best
-
-
Plenty of Muslims believe in Shariah, for example. Does that make them Islamists? I'm not sure it does.
-
Islamism is the imposition of Islamic values on others.Ppl who want to live according to Sharia themselves are not Islamists
-
but if they worked towards everyone being governed by sharia law, they would be.

It's an ideal.
-
What is?
-
That people can hate an ideology but not a person who espouses it. Not everyone can do that. See: politics

The concept that it's psychologically impossible to dislike ideas without disliking people inhibits criticism.
@godless_mom -
Leaving aside religion for a moment, surely you can hate a movie without hating its director as a person.

I believed in some pretty terrible (and stupid) ideas when I was young. Does it mean I hate myself?
@godless_mom -
you'd have to ask
@seatrout - I don't grasp the concept myself
-
If you see people primarily as embodying a hateful ideology then you will hate them. (cont)

It easily extends to our immediate relatives, because we're stuck with them. But others? Not so much.
-
Sure, one or two alienating ideas are fine, but too many and it's over.
