Saying we shld criticise speech rather than ban or use violence to prevent it & then criticising someone's speech is totally consistent

You only get confused abt this if you insist on seeing defending free speech as defense of specific speech you want banned or punished.
-
If you're a far-lefty who wants far-right speech banned or punished & freedom-loving moderates criticise this idea, they are being consistent
-
If they attempted to ban your speech or punch you for speaking, then you'd have cause to cry hypocrite.
-
We can't support 'We can speak coz our ideas are good & they can't coz their ideas are bad' even when we absolutely agree w the assessment.
-
Because then we have no defence if a majority decide the reverse is true & we must shut up or be punished coz we helped normalise that.
-
I know this is counterintuitive coz thoughout history all over the world,a dominant set of ideas have been established & counterviews banned
-
But I really think we were onto something with the whole Enlightenment and establishment of liberal, secular democracy thing.
-
Some far-leftists explicitly denounce liberalism & they're honest. More lefties think they can do this & still be liberal. They're wrong.
-
And now having ranted this rant, I will hopefully never have to say it again but just link it to ppl missing the point. Goodnight Twitter.

however, it IS hypocritical to defend free speech of bigots and NOT criticize them, all while claiming to be liberal.
