Why is it so hard to understand that defending free speech is not a commitment not to be very critical of its content? This is very basic.

No. No-one is defending the right to incite violence. That right doesn't exist.

It seemed to me you were saying that no idea is ever so awful that it shouldn't be protected.

All ideas can be expressed, yes. That doesn't include plotting any harmful action or inciting any harmful action.

Wouldn't you say that some hate speech would have to be considered incitement, though?
