OK but one wolfwhistle or one sentence is enough to get an impression of whether the other person wants your attention.

I guess I'm just trying to avoid being afraid of talking to people. A much nuanced discussion could be had about this I feel.

Not afraid. Just considerate. I realise this can vary with social norms. Personally, I'd rather be whistled at than talked to.
