Watching America like a soap opera and feeling like Europe has nothing to do with us. Detached. We're likely to find out we're not
I think May's speech today is clear evidence that the govt does not think like that at all.
I'm not talking about the government. It'd better be paying attention to the rest of the world! Talking abt ppl generally.
the article specifically mentioned the govt & May. I understand your concern but that article didn't do it justice.
I shldn't have linked my thoughts to that. Everyone thinks I'm talking abt Brexit & the government now but it was tangential.
But I agree with the article. That gov too tied up in domestic stuff. And that we cld destabilise Europe too easily.
#Brexit voter champing at the bit here for #GlobalBritain
That's great but I'm still not making myself clear. I'm not talking abt Brexit. Talking abt a shift over the last 50-60 years.
As memories of the wars & empire fade & we haven't had to be so conscious of ourselves in relation to everyone else.
An island mentality. A false sense of security & complacency that led us to fail to properly protect secular, liberal democracy
And think that everyone else was just like us really and liberal secular democracy was the natural state of being & secure.
And not realise how fragile this balance the west has/had really is. I include myself in this obv. But worsened in my lifetime
I totally agree with you about this liberal complacency. Post-modern cynicism about believing in western values must be reversed
Yes, it must.
Have you tried talking to them instead of making assumptions based on observations? Leaving EU =/= withdrawing from the world.
I'm talking about the people I'm talking to. The people in my life.
In what ways are they becoming disconnected? Forgive my scepticism, but your experience doesn't match my own.
As the wars recede into history, we've lost a sense of ourselves as one of the keepers of order.
Similarly memories of Empire are receding. Most ppl now have never felt dependent on what the rest of world doing.
We've never had to fight to defend liberal, secular democracy against fascism, communism or militant religion.
We've just been able to live our lives feeling secure & got complacent abt rest of the world. Now threatened again.
I sincerely believe that we've awoken from that complacent coma. Time will tell which of us is correct.
