Ppl can be silenced by being prevented from speaking or punished for it. I am conflicted on the idea of 'silencing' by social pressure.

I know that the vast majority of ppl need social validation but don't we mostly only care if the ppl we respect respect us back?

If punitive consequences can result, yes. But if ppl only disapprove of you? If surrounded by them all day, I suppose yes.

@nationofseals This is why I specified that first. I'm trying to separate fear of negative life consequences from fear of disapproval. -
If absolutely everyone disapproved of you, you cld get very lonely, obv, even if they had no power over your life. But this rarely happens.

I can't be shamed by being called racist or sexist because I know I'm neither & so do many ppl I respect.
-
What if hubby was called in at work and spoken to because of your so called islamophobia?
@DurinnMcfurren -
Or I was? That wouldn't be shaming me. That would be punitive consequences.
-
But if it's the company bowing to social pressure and stigma? I used hubby only to show indirect effect. 1/2
@DurinnMcfurren -
But I'm not talking about consequences. I'm talking about shaming in the form of disapproval.
-
Then you're right.(stop that by the way
)
But, I'm not sure they're are separable, anymore.
@DurinnMcfurren -
Psychologically, they are. We can work out what we're actually afraid of. Disapproval or consequences.

Not necessarily. In the past people have been fired b/c they got accused of being bigots; employers deciding to sack first,...
-
That's why I specified 'punishment' as a silencing tactic first. Now talking abt just being disapproved of.
-
Well sure, but "social pressure" does not exist in a vacuum. It does lead to results other than disapproval.
-
OK, but right now, I'm talking abt when it doesn't.
-
If it were possible to limit the results to merely disapproval then I don't think anyone would have a problem with it.
