Ppl can be silenced by being prevented from speaking or punished for it. I am conflicted on the idea of 'silencing' by social pressure.

If criticising Islam is widely understood to be racist. If criticising feminism is widely understood to be opposition to gender equality.

But calling ppl racist or sexist to silence them only works if they already think racism & sexism are bad things. Or does it?

I know that the vast majority of ppl need social validation but don't we mostly only care if the ppl we respect respect us back?

If punitive consequences can result, yes. But if ppl only disapprove of you? If surrounded by them all day, I suppose yes.
