For those confused about hypocrisy: It also doesn't include ppl taking a position, realising it was wrong & changing it. This is honesty.

there is a certain stigma surrounding hypocrites, perhaps part of a western honor culture?

I know that in my own family being a hypocrite was equated with dishonesty/untrustworthiness

Yeah, I agree. I think it's worth while to push against this tendency too. Hypocrisy should be seen as temporary imo.

Lots of cognitive mechanisms formed to detect free-loaders and cheats & much rage caused by it. Reputation = survival
