"People give different meanings to their lives'
is not really countered by
'A consensus on the meaning of words exists'
@EveKeneinan
The original claim was that an atheists life is not meaningless coz we find meaning in our lives on this earth.
-
-
Not that we make it out of nothing but that we choose from a range of things what meaning our lives will have.
-
Some ppl feel there can only be meaning if it is eternal & connected to the supreme creator of everything. I don't.
-
I accept that my meaning is small, local & temporary & differs from other people's. But its still meaning & enough.

That's not the claim I saw
@EveKeneinan debunking; she was arguing against the claim that such meaning is subjective/malleable. -
Huh? Mr OzAtheist said that we make our own meaning. She said that's no more possible than own truth or reality.
-
But it is true in the sense that we pick our purposes in life and find meaning in them. Motherhood, history for me.
-
That's: A) Not the same as 'making your own meaning' B) Only partly correct
-
Well, it's what is meant by that phrase. I wanted marriage, children & to be a historian. That's my meaning.
-
The philosophers do not care what you mean, only what you say. Hence, normal people often do not understand them.
-
Eve understood what was meant & replied to it.
-
Eve only thinks things are meaningful if her sky-daddy says so.
