I know some think I go on too much abt idea of 'tone policing' but so much division & hostility comes from the way we talk to each other.
-
It's not just that I think 'manners' matter coz I'm a middle-aged middle-class Englishwoman. They do matter if you want to get anywhere.
-
If you read any good source on persuading ppl of your argument & winning support, none of them recommend spewing vitriol & profanity on ppl.
-
Saying 'I have a right to be angry! Don't tell me how to feel. Your calm shows your privilege' doesn't actually make ranting a good tactic.
-
We can be sympathetic to ppl suffering uncontrollable rage following traumatic experiences of oppression w/out advocating it as activism.

I worry that if being critical of abusive communication styles is forbidden as 'tone policing' the Left will continue to fall in popularity
-
I can't overemphasise how important I think the way we talk to people is in determining whether the Left loses the cultural war in long term
-
However, I admit that sometimes when conveying this to 'Don't tone police me' ppl, my tone has left a lot to be desired. They've said so. (!)

Use of bad language with all its failings to avoid accusations of tone policing? Poor. Need to Educate better.
