You cld find me saying ppl who criticise feminism are opposed to gender equality in 2012 & arguing that it's wrong to assume that by 2015.

That doesn't imply hypocrisy. It implies that movements & attitudes both change.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I wonder if the fear of hypocrisy helps to discourage people from changing positions

there is a certain stigma surrounding hypocrites, perhaps part of a western honor culture?

I know that in my own family being a hypocrite was equated with dishonesty/untrustworthiness

Yeah, I agree. I think it's worth while to push against this tendency too. Hypocrisy should be seen as temporary imo.

Its been very important to human development that ppl are honest & contribute what they say they do.

Lots of cognitive mechanisms formed to detect free-loaders and cheats & much rage caused by it. Reputation = survival

@Surrey_Atheist what about if they"realize it was wrong" the moment public opinion changes? -
Then they could be easily swayed by popular opinion or insincere but not a hypocrite if openly change their mind.
