This would be a reasonable point if we were talking abt the meaning of words rather than the difference purposes ppl give their lives.https://twitter.com/EveKeneinan/status/820331421881536513 …
Exactly. I'm not claiming to gain meaning from anything I've invented or imagined.

I'm claiming, I'd have thought unexceptionably, that what gives my life meaning is subjective & that's normal.
-
But your example was of motherhood, which is not a subjective thing. You are objectively a mother.
-
Ha! But it doesn't objectively give my life meaning. I take it as my primary purpose which is subjective.
-
But not going to argue abt semantics. We agree my meaning is provided by prioritising things that actually exist?

Ergo, you are claiming to get meaning from real things. Which are not subjective.
-
OK, cool. The problem Eve had was with someone saying we each give our lives their own meaning.
-
We don't. We find meaning, but we can't just make it out of nothing. That's why some people feel meaningless.
-
I'm not claiming we make it out of nothing. We make it out of a range of things which are available to us.
-
The original claim was that an atheists life is not meaningless coz we find meaning in our lives on this earth.
-
Not that we make it out of nothing but that we choose from a range of things what meaning our lives will have.
-
Some ppl feel there can only be meaning if it is eternal & connected to the supreme creator of everything. I don't.
-
I accept that my meaning is small, local & temporary & differs from other people's. But its still meaning & enough.
