@aoksimpson No. We ( or I - I shouldn't assume ur view) must oppose authoritarianism. Not same as conservatism. Far left is illiberal too. -
but to work, liberalism has to be universal, no? So is therefore authoritarian to those that can't accept it?

That's the paradox. The only way to prevent ppl from forcing their views on others is by force. Prosecuting them.

The only alternative is to say 'everyone is allowed to live as they wish including making others live as they say'. Doesn't work

Have to agree You can live as a far-right religious conservative & I can live as a far-left atheist & we leave each other alone.

In this way liberalism is a compromise enabling ppl to live together rather than a position in itself.

Not that the conservatives opposed by the liberals in sense of right vs left. The left can't impose its values on right either.
