It is quite healthy & normal to decide what is meaningful to you, personally. Far less so to decide what is true or real in this way.
-
-
-
When ppl deny this, its because they do not really mean 'meaning' - they mean 'truth' or 'reality.' What life 'means' according to a claim
-
eg The meaning of life is to survive & procreate according to biological imperative or to serve God & attain heaven according to faith.
-
When ppl speak of giving their lives meaning, they don't make a truth claim. They refer to living with purpose. The purpose is subjective.
-
My purpose is about family, friends, dogs, history, languages, politics, secularism, human rights. It needn't have been abt any of those.

Helen, I'm afraid you are arguing with a mental pygmy, which is a nicer way of saying irredeemably dense.
-
Eve has a formidable intellect. It's just a shame what she's chosen to do with it.
-
Not when arguing philosophy, she doesn't. Has she ever read a word of Nietzsche, or know anything re: cognitive psychology?
-
Don't know. She's an aristotelian thomist, I think.
-
She's only let thousands of years of evolution of Western thought pass her by. And science. Essentialists are quaint.

I'm glad you agree with me. (Your words mean "Eve is right," by the way.)
