It is belief in an external authority or code, based on holiness or God, as opposed to self-choice for good.

I'd have thought that was a large part of it, yes. Do secular humanists have that?

I thought some to be a bit nuts, selfish, needing to make fun of others and feel superior, in-the-know.

But what what written down as the ethical code was quite good, somewhat enlightened.

Self-reflection is always important, to question basic assumptions, processes and own behavior.

People need common sense in making moral judgments, otherwise you get some wanting to cut off people's heads.
