I'm with @HPluckrose on this one. Statement is harmless and true in itself but *not* the reason we should have equal rights.

We should have equal right because women are human beings. That's it. Marriage and motherhood irrelevant.

In fairness, I recognise that the statement is rarely meant to enforce traditional views.

It depends who's making it. I spend a lot of time talking to religious conservatives who'd limit women to the home.

There are plenty of those. I don't hear them say that in defence of equal rights though.

IMO, when used to justify equal rights the "wifes and mothers" statement is usually in good faith.

When used to justify women staying at home, it's different.

They're both in good faith. Point is whether or not its used to justify restricting anyone or denying opportunities.

My point is that I would use it to justify equal rights. There are better statements that can be made for that.

But I'm not particularly concerned, given that the intentions are good.

Can we agree its OK for an emotional plea, not for public policy?

Yes, obviously, they might only be pretending to be emotional coz you can't genuinely decide what to feel.

I don't follow but due to typos I haven't been clear myself. I think we agree on all this anyway.
