Gender equality, LGBT equality, racial equality etc don't become less important values if they're hard to achieve. Can still be pragmatic.

Don't have to adopt moral cultural relativity to accept realistically that progress will be slow & might even need to be slow to work.

It worries me when ppl speak of *respecting* gender or LGBT inequality as a cultural norm simply coz its not going away fast.

Hard = time & persuasion, not side stepping. Rather move gradually & lock in agreed/ aligned liberal values than get no progress

But principles and pragmatics are different issues.

They can be linked. A principle remains aspirational (which is OK) unless we take steps to invoke change via laws/ trade etc.

Of course they are. They motivate us. I think we've strayed far from the point now.

I think we agreed on the principle of "as few restrictions as possible" -however that will be defined! All good food for thought
