I have interests that I find few ppl share. On Twitter, the ppl who share them find me, talk to me & listen to me. 5

Lets not be too hasty to condemn 'the internet' as abusive. I suspect that for many, what you get out depends on what you put in. 6

People also often respond in the same way they are treated online, i.e. start off w/ hate and vitriol & you'll get it in return.

Yes. Ppl are usually civil to me even tho I criticise many sacred cows coz I am civil to them. Arseholes exist tho.

Of course, whether it be just for kicks or because they are just insufferable jerks.... they do exist, albeit in a minority.
