      Way larger percentage of your population is literally not free. I read 1%?! But free citizens have more freedom of speech etc.

      the prison problem is due mostly to an insane preoccupation with punishing drug abusers.

      Yeah. We tend to leave them alone mostly. So we impose on citizens & restrict freedoms differently.

      true, but it's my impression at least that people in the UK are more willing to accept gov as a protective big brother.

      I don't know that we are. Not a big drive for guns but much protest re: drugs, right to die, free speech etc.

      Feels like you have freedoms we don't but are also more willing to take away basic freedom for minor offences.
