I've definitely had to defuse situations where my wife had mistook my tone for being hostile towards her.

Yes. Helps to begin with 'I think' or 'I feel' or end with 'don't you think?' Still say exactly the same thing.

being in a position where I teach people has altered the way I speak to others. I have a more scholarly tone now.

I get called that a lot. Its what happens when you try to explain yourself without being aggressive.
