What makes you think this? You think virtue is irrational?

If by 'asceticism' Eve means simply training & discipline, we agree those are good in moderation in many useful forms.

Neither her nor I will admit the "in moderation" to you either without qualifications. Discipline isn't properly ->
-
about the arbitrary maltreatment of oneself or whatever uncomfortable connotations have associated to the concept.
-
No I'm sure we cld agree on a level of discipline that is healthy but it would be tedious.
-
A monk or nun's life is a calling not appropriate for every man.
-
So the endorsement of asceticism doesn't imply it's right for every person in the same way.
-
Then maybe its more of a lifestyle choice than a virtue. Neutral. But I don't care any more. Bored.

I've met monks, lived beside them. It's a kind of training. That's the point of it. It gives a kind of happiness.
