I think we can understand universal liberalism & identity politics if we think of ppl as having three aspects & see which each favours. 1

Classical/universal liberalism focuses on individuality & commonality most.Everyone having same worth & right to be & do what's right 4 them
-
Identity politics focuses on group identity most. What my experience as a woman, PoC, trans person, gay man is like & how this differs. 4

The criticism of universal liberalism is that it could neglect to address the ways groups are marginalised because of their identity. 5
-
However, it contains its own solution. When ppl are recognised as individuals & fellow humans, marginalisation by identity cannot occur. 6
-
The criticism of identity politics is that it fails to treat ppl as individuals, puts them in boxes & divides them from rest of humanity. 7
-
It perpetuates the problem it seeks to address. A margin is a boundary outside the main body & ID politics places groups there. 8
-
I think the right way to address marginalisation of groups is as a failure to uphold universal liberalism. 9

Which results from tribal identity politics whether its white nationalism, patriarchy or critical race theory or feminism.10

I visualize it like a closing arc, with identity and individuality as strategies both tugging to inscribe a circle of humanity.
