@HPluckrose @Marvin_SuperDog @j_razor101 @JTheMagicRobot @sirtophamhat So fucking tired of the atheists that say "atheism _shouldn't_ be

Some atheists loathe 'atheist church'. Fine. That doesn't mean that the atheists for whom that resonates are 'damaging' atheism
-
Doesn't matter if they do confuse the concept of what atheism is unless the identity 'atheist' is really important to you.
-
It was to me but that wasn't healthy so the tribalism & denominations & ideology being connected to it making me ditch label is ok
-
Absolutely. If you claim a label for yourself, be prepared to provide your lengthy footnote as to what that label means to you
-
But we can still criticise the tribalism, sectarianism in atheism as we do in religion, politics etc. Can still say its bad.
-
To me it's only bad if it reaches the aforementioned Silverman level, attempt at establishing an orthodoxy.
-
To me, its bad to have tribes & sects generally. So I do resent a simply descriptor becoming something tribal but that's life.

People need to accept that once they take on a label, they're in a very big tent & it's up to them to differentiate themselves
-
Schisms, yes. You see David Silverman thing? Hectoring everyone to ID as atheist & have right values or they're pandering to faith
-
Ugh. How is that helpful, exactly?
-
I don't think it is. Its just what tends to happen when you ascribe values & ideology to a label.
-
Absolutely.
-
So is it worth resisting this & recognising that its not connected?
-
If someone is saying that atheism 'demands' this or that? Absolutely.
-
We agreed that simply ascribing values & ideology to labels leads to these limitations & tribalism.

More tribes, movements, purity, in groups and out groups. Feuds abt what atheism really means. Relig ppl pointing & laughing
-
But that describes *every* big group, including the pointing/laughing Christians
(as you know). -
Yes. I always liked that atheists weren't a group - like herding cats, its was said - but now just another tribe so ditch label.
-
Really? I don't see atheism as being a 1 tribe thing even now ~ I see ppl who *want* it to be that & equal # who don't.
-
Yes. There are ppl who say it shld be one tribe & ppl who say it shld be something else & ppl who say its just a disbelief.
-
I find it embarrassing but I can just call myself a non-believer now if ppl think atheism means something more than disbelief.
-
Yep. For me it depends on how energetic I feel lol. I'll go w atheist if I have the oomph for a potentially lengthy colloquy
