Sexually transmitted diseases which resulted in pubic baldness & offensive rotting smell also rife. Women with it wld buy merkins & scent.

Did perfume, cologne originate to mask offensive disease-related odors, then evolve into synthetic pheromones as used today?

To mask body odour, yes, and the odour of the streets, sewage, etc. Life was extremely smelly in medieval times.

Bit shy about inquiring about the source of the feminine fishy odor medieval gents thought erotic..

Why in the world would smelling like fish be attractive?!
-
Because ppl smelled. Frequent washing is a new thing. Much better to smell of healthy vaginal secretions than unhealthy ones.
-
Doesn't a fishy smell signify bacterial vaginosis? I think healthy secretions can be strong, but shouldn't be fishy...
-
Described as an 'oyster' smell.

Probably would have been harder with all that hair for men to find the "pearl"...
