Does 'You can do' not clearly mean 'Yes, you could do that' in America? Just been told its very hard to understand what I'm trying to say.
However, it was by someone trying to patronise me. But it wld be good to know. Cannot recall an American saying 'can do.' or 'will do.' now.

Was part of active US slang, "can do/no can do". Last I heard was in 'Buckaroo Banzai' in '82. ("That's a big no can do.")
-
Ah. Sarcasm, then.
-
Lack of enthusiasm really.

We don't like to say 'no' directly but these things mean them.https://twitter.com/SoVeryBritish/status/650681395212353536 …

"Can do" typically refers to self, as in "I can do that".
-
A 'can-do' attitude? Often implies doubt here.https://twitter.com/Jessicafayphoto/status/774262744690397184 …

When are the English going to learn to use English?
-
We use it just fine! Only very simple peoples expect it to mean what it says. :-P
-
I'd toss one of your wonderful English insults, but apparently they are terms of endearment. Weirdos. ;-)
-
Cock-womble. :-)
-
Haha! Exactly the one I had in mind. :P

I might say "Can do" or "Will do" as a response to a request. If someone told me simply, "You can do" that wd sound wrong to me.
-
Can you give an example of the way you would use that?
-
.
@debeehr Shall I tell him how I feel? You could do. Shall we go to the pub? We can do. Did you phone your mum? I will do. -
i think most Americans would drop the "do" and just say "you could", "we can" and "i will"
-
Yes, this is right.

"Will do" still in use, but not frequently in my circles...

Helen, it's true that the form with the trailing "do" is much less used in North America than on your side of the pond.
