Is empathy now to be understood as taking on other ppl's feelings & losing all judgement rather than understanding them & retaining it?
Yes but it all comes down to defining empathy as something other than 'understanding how people feel on an emotional level.'

He's presenting empathy as something that motivates us to help some not others. It needn't. Separating from compassion. Well, yes
-
I don't understand empathy as he describes it & possibly that's my mistake. But its only become difficult to discuss lately.

Yes, he's defining empathy in an narrower sense than it is often used.
-
He may have good reasons for this & reveal something important but my issue is with losing the word & having nothing to replace it.
-
Losing the word -- in what sense?
-
In conversations online. I tend to talk abt talking, finding common ground, understanding ppl, being charitable but also critical.
-
In short, I talk a lot abt trying to understand other people's motivations & feelings & then working with them to resolve things.
-
This is empathy first, really getting it, and then trying to work out how to find solutions using principles & reason.
-
Recently, ppl are disparaging of the empathy bit, implying it lacks reason & principles as tho these things cannot work together.
-
As tho we can somehow be compassionate & reasonable in finding solutions to problems based in emotions w/out understanding emotions
